WCAG 1.2.2 Captions (Prerecorded) Level A

Who this affects

The video has no captions, so anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing gets no access to the audio.

How to fix it

Add a <track kind="captions"> with an accurate caption file. Automatic captions need correcting before they count.

How much work is it?

Usually a developer work. That is a rough guide for planning, not an estimate for your codebase. A single content edit repeated across a template is a template change.

What a person still has to check

Passing this rule does not mean 1.2.2 passes. Automation checks part of the criterion, and the rest is a judgement:

Play each video and check the captions are accurate, synchronised, and include speaker changes.

Where this check comes from

This is an axe-core rule. We run axe in a real browser on every page we scan. Deque’s reference for video-caption
